CURRENT SERVICES OFFERED BY EMORY'S COUNSELING CENTER (CAPS)
After interviewing a licensed psychologist of Emory's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), I determined that the counseling center offers the following resources for students that are seeking help with mental illness, specifically depression and anxiety:
The counseling center, along with the above resources, encourages students to seek help earlier rather than later. It can often take 2-3 weeks to get an appointment after calling the counseling center/making an appointment, due to the influx of students that seek help and treatment. This is especially true during high anxiety times, like during midterms. The counseling center should not be used as a last resort; students should seek help as soon as they can.
So, are these resources enough for Emory students? This is what I wanted to investigate, based on my experience with the counseling center. I wanted to find out whether the lack of long-term counseling and their referral process hinders students from going, or if they find short-term counseling to be helpful. My research looks into whether or not students are satisfied with the current treatment offered at the university.
- Individual therapy (short-term counseling)
- Group therapy
- Stress management/biofeedback clinic
- Suicide prevention
- QPR training
- Stress evaluation online (any student can complete this)
- Emory Helpline
- Coordinates with Active Minds that holds various events around campus, geared toward stigma reduction
